Definition
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) is the UAE’s largest industrial company outside the oil and gas sector and one of the world’s top aluminium producers. Formed in 2013 through the merger of Dubai Aluminium (DUBAL) and Emirates Aluminium (EMAL), EGA is jointly owned by Mubadala Investment Company of Abu Dhabi and Investment Corporation of Dubai. The company operates smelters in Jebel Ali (Dubai) and Al Taweelah (Abu Dhabi), producing over 2.5 million tonnes of cast metal annually. EGA is notable for developing its own proprietary smelting technology, a rare capability among global aluminium producers.
UAE Context
EGA’s aluminium is a cornerstone of the UAE’s non-oil industrial output, with its products used in automotive, aerospace, construction, packaging, and electronics sectors by customers in over 60 countries. The company accounts for a significant portion of the UAE’s non-oil exports and directly employs thousands of workers. EGA’s in-house DX+ Ultra technology, one of the most energy-efficient smelting technologies in the world, is itself a commercially licensed product, generating technology transfer revenue. The company operates its own power plant and bauxite mine in the Republic of Guinea, giving it an integrated supply chain from raw material extraction through finished metal production.
